Whereas, Ulma S. Garris was employed as a science teacher at James E. Mallonee School in Hopewell; and

Whereas, on November 23, 1976, while attempting to mop up water in the classroom, Mrs. Garris fell injuring her back; and

Whereas, Mrs. Garris tried to return to work in January 1977, but due to her injuries she was forced to retire from teaching; and

Whereas, the Medical Review Board which initially heard her case determined that she was entitled to pay based on a disability that is not work-related; and

Whereas, since 1977, Mrs. Garris has received smaller monthly payments from the Virginia Retirement System than she would have received if it had been determined that she had suffered a work-related disability; and

Whereas, Mrs. Garris has requested that the Medical Review Board review her case and they have declined to do so; and

Whereas, Ulma S. Garris has no other means to obtain relief except by action of this body; now, therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. § 1. That there is hereby allocated from the general fund appropriation to the Virginia Retirement System for the relief of Ulma S. Garris the amount of $30,500 to be paid by check

issued by the State Treasurer on warrant of the Comptroller to Ulma S. Garris, upon a release by her of all claims against the Commonwealth and its political subdivisions, agencies, instrumentalities, officers or employees in connection with or arising out of the aforesaid occurrence.
