HB 219 Peanut seeds.

Introduced by: J. Paul Councill, Jr. | all patrons    ...    notes | add to my profiles

SUMMARY:

Peanut seeds. Suspends, until July 1, 1994, enforcement of regulations establishing the minimum germination standard of 75 percent for peanuts used for agricultural seed. The 1993 drought severely reduced both the yield and the germination of those peanuts grown for seed. Current regulations require that peanut seeds germinate a minimum of 75 percent to be legal for sale. The Virginia Crop Improvement Association (VCIA) estimates that the seed crop will be six million pounds short for the 1994 planting season, if the minimum germination is maintained at the present 75 percent level.
