SUMMARY AS PASSED:
Teacher proficiency; continuing contract status. Provides that any teacher hired on or after July 1, 2001, will be required, as a condition of achieving continuing contract status, to have successfully completed training in instructional strategies and techniques for intervention for or remediation of students who fail or are at risk of failing the Standards of Learning assessments. Local school divisions will be required to provide the training at no cost to teachers employed in their division. In the event a local school division fails to offer the training in a timely manner, no teacher will be denied continuing contract status for failure to obtain such training. This bill is identical to SB 1304.
SUMMARY AS PASSED HOUSE:
Teacher proficiency; continuing contract status. Provides that any teacher hired on or after July 1, 2001, will be required, as a condition of achieving continuing contract status to have successfully completed training in instructional strategies and techniques for intervention for or remediation of students who fail or are at risk of failing the Standards of Learning assessments. Requires teachers hired on and after July 1, 2001, as a condition of achieving continuing contract status, to demonstrate proficiency, in accordance with criteria and procedures established by the Board, in (i) the subject matter for the relevant teaching endorsement area and (ii) instructional strategies and techniques for intervention for or remediation of students who fail or are at risk of failing the Standards of Learning assessments.
