SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 246
Commending the Model General Assembly.

WHEREAS, the Virginia YMCA, committed to developing the mind, body, and spirit of all people, has for a century provided leadership development activities for the youth of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, in 1948, 119 high school students attended the first YMCA Model General Assembly at the Capitol in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, since that time, over 25,000 students from Virginia's high schools have experienced first-hand the legislative process; and

WHEREAS, the Model General Assembly has been proven an excellent supplement to classroom learning and has been termed Virginia's finest citizenship training program; and

WHEREAS, over 200 bills first introduced at the Model General Assembly have subsequently become state law either by legislative action or by executive order; and

WHEREAS, several former and current members of the General Assembly and many others throughout the business and professional communities were introduced to the legislative process and to the rewards of public service through the Model General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, because of their involvement with the Model General Assembly, many young people have been inspired to take active roles in the political process at the local, state, and national levels; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia YMCA's efforts in leadership development and citizenship training through the Model General Assembly and other model government programs help make the Commonwealth a better place to live, work, and raise a family; and

WHEREAS, 1997 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Model General Assembly; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginia YMCA and the Model General Assembly for their positive and beneficial work on behalf of the youth of the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly call to the attention of Virginia's schools, educational organizations, civic groups, and citizens the significance of the Model General Assembly in the shaping of the character of the Commonwealth's young citizens; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia YMCA as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on this landmark anniversary of the Model General Assembly.
