WHEREAS, Charles R. Quarles was born in Richmond on May 4, 1921, and graduated from Jefferson High School in Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, Charles R. Quarles served his country in the U.S. Army overseas as a sergeant in anti-aircraft; and

WHEREAS, Charles R. Quarles returned to civilian life, attended the University of Richmond, and became affiliated in business with International Harvester as a sales representative for 18 years and then with Bemiss Equipment Company; and

WHEREAS, Charles R. Quarles is active in church and civic affairs, as a member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond, the Scottish Rite and Acca Temple Shrine, the American Legion, the University of Richmond Spider Club, the Ninety and Nine Social, the Sycamore Creek Golf Club and as Captain of the Acca Temple Patrol; and

WHEREAS, Charles R. Quarles is now retired from his position as Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Delegates, having served in that position for six years, from 1988 to 1994; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates commend Charles R. Quarles for his years of loyal service to this body, thank him for the many kindnesses he bestowed upon its members, and wish him happiness in his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charles R. Quarles as a memento of his association with the House of Delegates and as a token of thanks from all those with whom he has been associated in the service of the Commonwealth.
