AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE

Designating September as Virginia's D.A.T.E. for a Healthy Future Month.

WHEREAS, promoting health today is the most important part of preventing disease tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, the Fredericksburg Area Regional Health Council, Inc., has developed a health education program called D.A.T.E.; and

WHEREAS, improper Diet, use of Alcohol, other drugs, and Tobacco, and inadequate Exercise are the four primary correctable risk factors in the 10 leading causes of death in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the D.A.T.E. program addresses these four correctable risk factors by urging children and adults to modify unhealthy behavior to prevent premature death; and

WHEREAS, the D.A.T.E. program is designed for all citizens of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Fredericksburg Area Regional Health Council plans to launch the D.A.T.E. program, which has been endorsed by the Medical Society of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, stressing the benefits of improved behavior and exercise, D.A.T.E. encourages self-esteem and personal responsibility by providing continuous education to adolescents on the risks of improper diet, and alcohol and tobacco use; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That September be designated as Virginia's D.A.T.E. for a Healthy Future Month; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge the citizens of Virginia to follow the suggestions of this worthwhile initiative to improve the health of all Virginians.
