1997 SESSION
975889376WHEREAS, in July of 1946, some three dozen citizens met for the first time to discuss the creation of a volunteer fire department for King George County; and
WHEREAS, shortly thereafter, the King George Volunteer Fire Department was created, a department that has now served the citizens of King George with great distinction for 50 years; and
WHEREAS, from those humble beginnings a half-century ago, the King George Volunteer Fire Department has grown into a highly dedicated group of over 75 active firefighters who answered nearly 700 calls last year; and
WHEREAS, the King George Volunteer Fire Department now boasts two fire houses, in King George and in Dahlgren, and eight fire trucks; and
WHEREAS, in perhaps their finest hour, the King George volunteer firefighters fought a huge blaze in 1963, which consumed nearly 5,000 acres in King George and Westmoreland Counties over three days; and
WHEREAS, despite the size and duration of the conflagration, no occupied homes were lost, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the King George volunteers; and
WHEREAS, as it celebrates its golden anniversary, the King George Volunteer Fire Department can relive with pride its 50 years of selfless, dedicated, and successful service to the citizens of King George County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the King George Volunteer Fire Department on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Fred Clodius, president of the King George Volunteer Fire Department, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes.
