WHEREAS, upon application by the United States Soccer Federation, the recognized national governing body for soccer within the United States, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world governing body for soccer, has designated the United States as the host country for the 1999 Women's World Cup; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth has within its boundaries the facilities, premises, access roads, thoroughfares, and other areas that may be used for accommodating, staging, and conducting the 1999 Women's World Cup and its related activities; and
WHEREAS, hosting the 1999 Women's World Cup would generate international good will, enhance the worldwide renown and prestige of the Commonwealth, produce new jobs, and create substantial beneficial economic and fiscal activity; and
WHEREAS, the United States Soccer Federation, the entity authorized by FIFA to organize and stage the 1999 Women's World Cup, has requested a declaration of support from the Commonwealth for holding the tournament in Virginia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby express its support for Virginia's hosting the 1999 Women's World Cup; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly commend and encourage the Richmond Metropolitan Sports Backers in their efforts to have Richmond selected as the site of the 1999 Women's World Cup; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the United States Soccer Federation so that its members might be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia.
