WHEREAS, Joseph Elliott "Red" Knight, a well-known and widely respected member of the Simonsdale community of Portsmouth, died on July 1, 1995; and

WHEREAS, a native of Nansemond and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Red Knight retired after nearly four decades of service to the Norfolk Naval Supply Yard; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Red Knight devoted his time and energy to the Simonsdale community through his membership in the Monday Morning Coffee Club, a group of volunteers who met to discuss neighborhood problems and what they could do to solve them; and

WHEREAS, among his many contributions, Red Knight collected newspapers for recycling, turning over the proceeds to neighborhood clean-up and repair efforts; and

WHEREAS, an extraordinarily gracious, soft-spoken man, Red Knight was so effective in his community-service efforts that he was thought of by many residents as "Mr. Simonsdale"; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the loss of a fine Virginian, Joseph Elliott Knight; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph Elliott Knight as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
