1995 SESSION
HB 1874 Participation by certain students in interscholastic activities.
Introduced by: Richard L. Fisher | all patrons ... notes | add to my profiles
SUMMARY:
Participation by certain students in interscholastic activities. Allows local school boards to permit students in home instruction to participate in “interscholastic activities” (defined as athletic and academic teams and squads, clubs, literary and visual and performing arts organizations) upon meeting certain requirements. The student must reside in the attendance zone of the school in which eligibility is sought, attend a home instruction program meeting statutory requirements and provide evidence of such attendance to the division superintendent. The student need not meet classroom or school attendance requirements established by the school division or any voluntary association administering interscholastic activities. The person providing home instruction must certify as to the student's academic progress; the principal may require additional evidence. A public school student who has failed to meet academic eligibility standards for participation in interscholastic activities may not subsequently become eligible as a home-school student during the same school year. The student in home instruction who is eligible to participate in interscholastic activities must meet the same standards of behavior and performance as public school students and must comply with all relevant school policies while participating. No state or local funds appropriated for educational purposes may be used to support participation in interscholastic activities by students in home instruction.
