WHEREAS, the Department of Family Practice at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University was founded in 1970 to train family physicians to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the fourth such program in the nation, the MCV-VCU Department of Family Practice was created to address an acute shortage of family physicians in rural and urban areas, a growing concern among Virginians who found themselves living in areas with inadequate primary medical care, and a slowing of economic growth in some sections of the Commonwealth due to this shortage; and
WHEREAS, during the past 25 years, the Department of Family Practice at MCV-VCU has achieved results that rank among the best in the nation, including an average of over 21 percent of MCV graduates choosing family practice for their medical careers, double the national average; and
WHEREAS, since 1973, 661 family physicians have graduated from five MCV-VCU Family Practice Residencies at Blackstone, Chesterfield, Fairfax, Hanover, and Newport News, 65 percent of whom have remained in Virginia, and 40 percent of whom are practicing in underserved areas; and
WHEREAS, the Blackstone Family Practice Residency has produced the best results in the nation for training rural family physicians; and
WHEREAS, over 70 of Virginia's cities and counties have at least one MCV-VCU Family Practice Residency graduate practicing in the community; and
WHEREAS, despite the outstanding success of the Department of Family Practice, the need for primary care physicians in many Virginia localities remains acute, and as the program enters its second quarter-century, the MCV-VCU Department of Family Practice remains committed to its mission of training family physicians for the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the MCV-VCU Department of Family Practice for its 25 years of invaluable contribution to the health needs of citizens of Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. David W. Marsland, Chairman of the MCV-VCU Department of Family Practice, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for the signal accomplishments of this vital program.
