HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 595
Expressing the support of the General Assembly for the program and goals of the 1990 World Summit for Children.

WHEREAS, every day, 35,000 of the world's children under five years of age die from hunger and from diseases related to hunger; and

WHEREAS, more than one billion of the world's people live in such poverty that they cannot keep themselves alive without outside help; and

WHEREAS, even here in Virginia, one out of every five children lives in poverty, and 100,000 children under the age of 12 suffer from hunger; and

WHEREAS, moved by these crises and others like them, the President of the United States and 70 other heads of state met in 1990 at a World Summit for Children and committed themselves and their countries to giving every child a better future; and

WHEREAS, the goals established by the World Summit for Children are to enhance children's health, eradicate hunger and malnutrition, reduce illiteracy and provide educational opportunities for all children, ameliorate the plight of orphans and all other children who live under especially difficult circumstances, protect the essential needs of children and families in violence-ridden areas, protect the environment, and attack poverty in all parts of the world; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby formally express its support for and commitment to the program and goals of the 1990 World Summit for Children.
