1995 SESSION
WHEREAS, on February 1, 1995, Ellis S. Bingley, Sr., of York will celebrate his 100th birthday; and
WHEREAS, a native of New Kent County, Ellis Bingley is a veteran of World War I, during which he served as a gunner on the U.S.S. Leviathan, a former German cruise ship converted into a troop carrier; and
WHEREAS, arriving in York County in 1921, Ellis Bingley ran a small store in Magruder, in the area that is now Camp Peary, and vividly remembers when the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg was no more than a dream, the roads were almost all unpaved, and oystering was the main livelihood for many residents of York; and
WHEREAS, in 1943, Ellis Bingley opened his own store on Penniman Road in what is now called Bingley's Corner, a store he ran for nearly 40 years; and
WHEREAS, in 1947, Ellis Bingley was elected to the York County Board of Supervisors from the Bruton District in the days when the county had no courthouse and no jail; and
WHEREAS, during his long and productive life, Ellis Bingley has observed and participated in the startling changes that have occurred in York County and the Peninsula, and he brings a unique and valuable perspective to the history of the area; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly congratulate Ellis S. Bingley, Sr., on the occasion of the centennial anniversary of his birth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ellis S. Bingley, Sr., as an expression of the best wishes of the General Assembly.
