HB 1366 Bar exam.

SUMMARY:

Bar exam. Authorizes, until July 1, 1996, a third route for students to take the Virginia Bar examination, i.e., completion of a course of study at an exclusively part-time, weekend law school located in Alexandria (identified by population parameters). The Board of Bar Examiners must approve the course of study of such law school (the Northern Virginia Law School) as being equivalent to a four-year study of law in a practicing attorney's office and the school will not be required to meet accreditation standards requiring full-time faculty members. "Part-time weekend law school" is defined as a course of legal study conducted for at least nine hours between Friday and Monday for thirty-three or more weeks per year. This non-ABA program is similar to "reading." This program would not have a full-time faculty, would not be accredited, is less costly than a traditional night law school, and may take less time than traditional night law school. This bill also requires the Board of Bar Examiners to adopt requirements for part-time weekend law school education and submit these requirements to the General Assembly for review prior to the 1995 Session.
