SUMMARY AS PASSED:

Health education; menstrual education instruction permitted. Permits each school board to provide a program of instruction on menstrual education as a part of any health education instruction offered at such grade level in grades four through eight as the school board deems appropriate.

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Board of Education; Standards of Learning; family life education; health education; menstrual education curriculum guidelines and instruction. Requires the Board of Education to develop Standards of Learning objectives and accompanying curriculum guidelines for instruction on menstrual education, to be provided at grade levels four through eight and to be required of all students, regardless of gender. The bill requires such Standards of Learning objectives and accompanying curriculum guidelines on menstrual education to include instruction on the biological processes and functions of the menstrual cycle, menstrual cycle symptoms, side effects, and management, societal and cultural attitudes toward the menstrual cycle, and other topics relating to the menstrual cycle. The bill requires each school board to provide at grade levels four through eight instruction on the menstrual education, consistent with the Standards of Learning objectives and accompanying curriculum guidelines developed by the Board. The bill permits each school board to provide such instruction on menstrual education as a part of an existing family life education program or an existing health education program, provided that such instruction is provided to each student at each grade level, four through eight, regardless of gender.
