2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, Sarah Thomas Mayhew, who was named the president of the Fairfax Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists in 2023, has served the Fairfax County community for 20 years in various volunteering capacities related to protecting Fairfax County’s natural habitat and the Chesapeake Bay watershed; and
WHEREAS, since 2003, Sarah Mayhew has been an ambassador in the Audubon at Home program with the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia; the program works with property owners and managers to design outdoor landscapes with native plants to conserve and restore Fairfax County’s natural habitat to support bird and wildlife populations and enhance biodiversity; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Mayhew has volunteered since 2003 with the Fairfax County Park Authority, organizing volunteer trash cleanups at Middleridge Park and Woodglen Lake Park; these trash clean ups helped remove plastics and other pollutants from the Chesapeake Bay watershed; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Mayhew has provided educational enrichment to groups, including local Boy Scout troops, teaching participants how to identify invasive plants and the best techniques for their removal, as well as how to identify and properly care for appropriate native plants; and
WHEREAS, as the president of the Fairfax Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists, Sarah Mayhew manages nearly 300 volunteers who work on numerous projects to preserve habitat space and protect the Chesapeake Bay watershed and provide training for volunteers to become certified master naturalists; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists has a cooperative agreement with Fairfax County Park Authority, which allows members to choose from a list of more than 20 county projects and volunteer to support the preservation of environmentally sensitive lands and historically significant sites; the organization also provides equitable education opportunities for the public; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Sarah Thomas Mayhew hereby be commended on the occasion of her selection as president of the Fairfax Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists for her exceptional achievements in environmental preservation; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sarah Thomas Mayhew as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for her dedication and service to the Commonwealth.
