Celebrating the life of Allan Roberts.

WHEREAS, Allan Roberts, a public servant, entrepreneur, and man of deep faith who touched countless lives in the Gate City community through his leadership and kindness, died on October 6, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Allan “Cotton” Roberts grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee, and graduated from Ketron High School; he subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree from Steed College, then served his country in the United States Army as an MGM-31 Pershing missile crew member stationed in Germany during the Cold War; and

WHEREAS, Cotton Roberts joined Eastman Chemical Company in an entry-level position and retired as a senior team manager after a distinguished career; and

WHEREAS, in later life Cotton Roberts and his wife, Vickie, opened The Family Bakery, a beloved local business that contributed to the revitalization of downtown Gate City; they subsequently opened two other businesses and renovated other properties for retail development in the area; and

WHEREAS, Cotton Roberts was also a founding member of Gate City Frontier, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting downtown Gate City; and

WHEREAS, Cotton Roberts further supported the community as a member of the Gate City Town Council for more than a decade, including a term as vice mayor; and

WHEREAS, Cotton Roberts supported young people by coaching the Colonial Heights Optimist Club football team and a baseball travel team for the American Amateur Baseball Congress; he also relished every opportunity to support his sons and nephews when they played for Gate City High School teams; and

WHEREAS, Cotton Roberts enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of First Baptist Church Gate City, where he served as a deacon, started a youth program, was active in missionary work, and was a coach and referee in the Upward Basketball program for many years; and

WHEREAS, Cotton Roberts will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Vickie; his children, Elizabeth, Aaron, and Christopher, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Allan Roberts; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Allan Roberts as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
