SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 141
Celebrating the life of Marvin Joseph Weniger.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 7, 2024

 

WHEREAS, Marvin Joseph Weniger of Virginia Beach, a patriotic veteran who worked diligently to maintain trust and integrity in the electoral process, died on February 28, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Weniger grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota, and graduated from Saint John’s Preparatory School in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he was a member of the debate club; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Weniger enlisted in the United States Navy after high school and continued his education by studying electrical engineering at the University of Idaho and later earning a master’s degree in international studies from Salve Regina University in Rhode Island; and

WHEREAS, during his long career in the United States Navy, Marvin Weniger specialized in surface warfare and achieved the rank of captain; he served during the Vietnam War and later became the executive officer of the USS Truxton, and the commanding officer of the USS Harold E. Holt, then the USS Long Beach; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation, Marvin Weniger received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement from the military in 1991, Marvin Weniger and his family lived aboard a sailboat for 11 years before settling in Virginia Beach; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Weniger was an active leader in the Virginia Beach community who served on the Virginia Beach Electoral Board and was a passionate advocate for election integrity; and

WHEREAS, Marvin Weniger will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Christine; his 10 children and their families, including 29 grandchildren; his sister, Teresa; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Marvin Joseph Weniger; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marvin Joseph Weniger as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
