2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 2023, the Virginia State University marching band was selected by ESPN as the best marching band from a historically Black college or university in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II; and
WHEREAS, throughout the 2023 season, the Virginia State University (VSU) marching band, known as the Trojan Explosion, was graded by a panel of judges in the areas of auxiliaries, drum majors, percussion, musicality, marching and maneuvering, and other band components; and
WHEREAS, over the course of the year, the VSU Trojan Explosion was invited to perform at the White House and on the NBC TODAY Show; the band competed in the National Battle of the Bands in Houston, Texas, and was featured in a Fox Sports segment about bands from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU); and
WHEREAS, ably led by Taylor Whitehead, VSU’s director of marching and pep bands, the VSU Trojan Explosion ranked first in the nation in drum majors, percussion, and auxiliaries at different points in the year; and
WHEREAS, as the top National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II band, the VSU Trojan Explosion was selected to perform in ESPN’s inaugural HBCU Band of the Year competition on December 15, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia; and
WHEREAS, the VSU Trojan Explosion finished in second place, earning accolades for its crisp choreography, in which members of the marching band spelled out ATL on the field of Mercedes-Benz Stadium; and
WHEREAS, in addition to their musical talents, the members of the VSU Trojan Explosion have demonstrated high academic achievement and are committed to leadership on campus; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Virginia State University marching band hereby be commended for representing the Commonwealth as one of the top marching bands in the country as selected by ESPN; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Taylor Whitehead, director of the Virginia State University marching band, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the band’s achievements and best wishes for the future.
