SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 124
Commending Ann Cannon Taylor.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 6, 2024

 

WHEREAS, Ann Cannon Taylor, an esteemed educator and education administrator and an active and engaged member of the Petersburg community, has made a profound and lasting impact on countless lives through her service and dedication; and

WHEREAS, a native of Danville, Ann Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Virginia State University and also furthered her education at the University of South Carolina, the University of Georgia, and the University of Seoul in South Korea; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor contributed to the success of thousands of students over her career as a teacher, counselor, and administrator at the high school and collegiate level and ultimately retired as a counselor from Chesterfield County Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, in the early 1970s, Ann Taylor played a pivotal role in helping to desegregate schools in South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor is married to Colonel Porcher L. Taylor, Jr., and she served as president of the Officers’ Wives Club, as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, and as an Army Community Service counselor for military families during her husband’s tenure in the military; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor is the mother of five children, Vernita, Porcher III, the late Nolani, Angela, and Cheryl; grandmother to four; and great-grandmother to two, and she worked tirelessly over the years to support her family; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor has given generously of her time to various civic organizations and activities in the Tri-Cities area, including the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, the Arthritis Foundation, United Way, a number of local homeless shelters, and the P.T. Taylor/Downtown Churches United Walk Against Hunger; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor previously served as chair of the Cameron Foundation Board of Directors, which led to the establishment of the Ann Cannon Taylor Tri-Cities Region Academic Scholarship Fund; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor serves as vice-chair of the Petersburg Library Foundation and is a member of the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew Board of Trustees, the Ivy Community Foundation, and the Women’s Committee for the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor has promoted health and public safety in Petersburg as a life member of the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor has fostered community as a member of the executive board of the Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Petersburg chapter of The Links, Inc., serving both organizations at the local, regional, and national levels; and

WHEREAS, a life member of the Virginia State University Alumni Association and the recipient of 2013 Alumnus of the Year honors, Ann Taylor serves as one of the class coordinators for the Class of 1956, which has the largest class endowment at the school; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her service, Ann Taylor was awarded the Fort Lee Good Neighbor Award by Major General Mark T. Simerly in August 2022, as well as the key to the City of Petersburg on her 89th birthday; and

WHEREAS, guided by her faith, Ann Taylor enjoys worship and fellowship with her community at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Petersburg, where she serves with the outreach ministry and in other leadership positions; and

WHEREAS, Ann Taylor’s indefatigable efforts and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others have helped to make Petersburg a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Ann Cannon Taylor hereby be commended for her legacy of service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ann Cannon Taylor as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for her contributions to Petersburg and the Commonwealth.
