2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Swift Creek Middle School cheerleading team of Chesterfield County won first place in the Chesterfield County Middle School Cheerleading Competition Championship on February 21, 2024; and
WHEREAS, the Swift Creek Middle School Sailors were the top team among the ten schools that participated in this county-wide competition at Clover Hill High School in Chesterfield County; and
WHEREAS, the Swift Creek Sailors practiced five days a week, averaging two hours each practice and rehearsal, all while completing their usual course of school work and participating in other extracurricular activities; and
WHEREAS, the Swift Creek Sailors’ coaches, Katie Coates and Savannah Parker, are also teachers at Swift Creek Middle School and devote their time during and after school to mentoring and training 20 squad members, including 15 competitive members and five alternate-competitive members; and
WHEREAS, Coach Coates and Coach Parker work to ensure a positive and welcoming environment for the Swift Creek Sailors, regardless of their skill level or experience, and foster a team that places respect, determination, perseverance, and kindness at the center of their culture, enabling girls to learn, support each other, and grow in their confidence and leadership skills; and
WHEREAS, cheerleading is a sport that incorporates other disciplines, and the Swift Creek Sailors are required to be trained in various athletics, including cardiovascular exercises, gymnastics, tumbling, and dance; and
WHEREAS, according to USA Cheer, the United States governing body for the sport of cheering, cheerleading has gained in popularity over the years and is now one of the most popular activities in the United States with over three million participants; and
WHEREAS, according to USA Cheer, the first “cheer leader” took the field at the University of Minnesota during a game in 1898, leading the crowd in a chant to spur on their team while unknowingly setting the stage for cheerleading as we know it today; and
WHEREAS, cheerleaders consistently perform engaging routines at sports events such as football and basketball games, leading spectators in supporting and encouraging their respective teams; and
WHEREAS, cheerleaders participate in competitions at the county, district, state, collegiate, and national levels that are designed to challenge their physical abilities as they develop and execute complex, rigorous, and demanding competitive routines; and
WHEREAS, the Swift Creek Sailors’ victory represents the first time Swift Creek Middle School has taken first place at the Chesterfield County Middle School Cheerleading Competition Championship; and
WHEREAS, the Swift Creek Sailors stand as an example of the excellence that Swift Creek Middle School and Chesterfield County Public Schools strive to achieve every single day; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Swift Creek Middle School cheerleading team hereby be commended for its outstanding performance and representation of Swift Creek Middle School, Chesterfield County, and the sport of cheerleading; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Swift Creek Middle School cheerleading team as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s pride and congratulations for its remarkable achievement.
