SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 7
Celebrating the life of Granville Edison Fisher, Jr.

WHEREAS, Granville Edison Fisher, Jr., an honorable veteran, esteemed businessman and mortician, and beloved member of the Northern Neck community, died on June 5, 2023; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the historic Armstead T. Johnson High School in Westmoreland County, Granville Fisher briefly attended what is today Virginia State University before joining the United States Army in 1946; and

WHEREAS, Granville Fisher served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the quartermaster’s office during the United States’ occupation of Japan at the end of World War II; and

WHEREAS, following his service, Granville Fisher studied mortuary science in Philadelphia before ultimately returning to Westmoreland County to join his family’s business, then known as Weldon’s Funeral Home and later renamed the Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home in 1997; and

WHEREAS, for more than 72 years, Granville Fisher gracefully and compassionately assisted families of the Northern Neck as they honored and remembered their departed loved ones; his dedication to his profession was evidenced by his longstanding membership with the Virginia Morticians’ Association and the Northern Neck Funeral Directors Association; and

WHEREAS, Granville Fisher gave generously of his time for the benefit of others through his involvement with various alumni associations and health and medical organizations, including the Westmoreland County Rescue Squad, of which he was a charter member; and

WHEREAS, guided throughout his life by his faith, Granville Fisher enjoyed worship and fellowship with his community at Galilee Baptist Church in Montross, where he was baptized and where he served as a deacon for 66 years; and

WHEREAS, Granville Fisher lived and shared his faith as an active member of what is today the Northern Neck Baptist Deacons’ Union, serving as the organization’s secretary for more than 35 years, and as a member of the Northern Neck Baptist Association; and

WHEREAS, preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Bernice, Granville Fisher will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his children, Gary, Cecelia, Darryl, and Wanda, and their families; and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Granville Edison Fisher, Jr., a prominent member of the Northern Neck community whose faith, service, and humility inspired all who knew him; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Granville Edison Fisher, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
