SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 39
Commending Scott Chambers.

WHEREAS, Scott Chambers, a dedicated and highly admired deputy with the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office who was wounded in the line of duty in January 2023, was selected as the 2023 Deputy of the Year by the Virginia Sheriff’s Association for his bravery and professionalism; and

WHEREAS, Scott Chambers is a former United States Army Ranger and has worked in law enforcement for more than two decades; he is a member of the Criminal Apprehension Unit of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office and a sworn deputy with the U.S. Marshals Service; and

WHEREAS, as part of his work with the U.S. Marshals Service, Scott Chambers was assigned to a task force that was tracking a homicide suspect who had been on the loose for two weeks; and

WHEREAS, on January 11, 2023, Scott Chambers and the members of the task force located the suspect, who leapt out of a vehicle, firing two handguns at the officers; and

WHEREAS, Scott Chambers returned fire, but was shot three times and had to rely on his emergency medical training to apply a tourniquet before the scene was secured and assistance arrived; he was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent several surgeries and was released two weeks later; and

WHEREAS, admired by his fellow officers for his toughness, determination, and cool-headedness under pressure, Scott Chambers received the Wounded in Combat and Combat Cross medals, two of the highest honors of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office; and

WHEREAS, Scott Chambers was selected as the Deputy of the Quarter by the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office, before earning the statewide Deputy of the Year award the following July; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Scott Chambers, a courageous law-enforcement officer in Chesapeake, on the occasion of his selection as the 2023 Deputy of the Year by the Virginia Sheriff’s Association; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Scott Chambers as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his commitment to serving and protecting the members of the Chesapeake community.
