2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, Willie L. Gentry, a dedicated public servant who worked diligently to enhance the quality of life for his fellow Louisa County residents as a member of the Louisa County Board of Supervisors for two decades, retired from public office at the end of December 2023; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Willie Gentry worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation as an engineer for 35 years; he arrived in Louisa County in 1980 to handle regional operations for the department and worked with several local governments over the course of his career; and
WHEREAS, Willie Gentry was first elected to the Louisa County Board of Supervisors in 2003 and represented the Cuckoo District for the next 20 years; he completed extensive coursework to become a certified supervisor through the Virginia Association of Counties and served five terms as vice chair and three terms as chair; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure on the Louisa County Board of Supervisors, Willie Gentry promoted fiscal stability, planned for responsible growth, and facilitated the development of critical infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, Willie Gentry provided his leadership and expertise to a wide range of local, regional, and statewide boards and commissions, ably representing the needs and concerns of Louisa County residents; and
WHEREAS, Willie Gentry helped resolve longstanding boundary issues with Goochland County, and served on the Thomas Jefferson Regional Planning District Commission, where he oversaw important regional initiatives, including transportation enhancements in the Zion Crossroads area; and
WHEREAS, Willie Gentry played an instrumental role in the update process for the 2040 Louisa County Comprehensive Plan, setting in motion crucial efforts to guide future growth, and was pivotal in the expansion of broadband Internet service across the county; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as chair in 2011, Willie Gentry led his fellow supervisors to plan and execute recovery and reconstruction efforts after an earthquake; he built strong relationships with stakeholders and other government agencies to ensure that residents’ needs and concerns were addressed efficiently and effectively; and
WHEREAS, Willie Gentry led by example, offering unique insights and working to achieve consensus in challenging situations; in all his interactions, he demonstrated kindness, compassion, and courtesy toward both his fellow government officials and members of the public; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Willie L. Gentry on the occasion of his retirement from the Louisa County Board of Supervisors; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Willie L. Gentry as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his contributions to the Louisa County community.
