2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, George Thomas Garten of Covington, an entrepreneur who served residents of the Alleghany Highlands for more than three decades as the owner of Greenway’s Real Estate and Auction, Inc., died on January 24, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Thomas “Tommy” Garten was born in Covington and graduated from Covington High School; he subsequently received an associate degree from Ferrum College and a bachelor’s degree from James Madison University, then completed his education at the Reppert School of Auctioneering; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Garten owned and managed several successful businesses in the Alleghany Highlands, including Garten Trucking, and he became a partner in Greenway’s Real Estate and Auction in 1974; and
WHEREAS, after his father’s death in 1986, Tommy Garten became the owner, broker, and auctioneer of Greenway’s Real Estate and Auction, where he earned admiration for his professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Garten’s personal experience in owning and managing livestock and agricultural real estate helped him better serve clients, and in recognition of his expertise, he was appointed by the governor to the state Auctioneers Board; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Garten also served on the Ferrum College Board of Trustees and received the Alumni of the Year Award from Covington High School; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Garten will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Mary Beth; his sons, George and Robert, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of George Thomas Garten; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George Thomas Garten as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
