HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 7
Commending the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

WHEREAS, May 29, 2023, marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, which honors the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American independence and promotes an interest in education, genealogy, history, historic preservation, patriotism, and Americanism; and

WHEREAS, the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter was founded in May 1923 by Berkeley Gilkeson Calfee with a charter membership of 19 women to carry out this important service work on the local level; and

WHEREAS, currently, the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter has 67 members who continue this fine tradition, along with the more than one million women who have served in this vibrant service organization’s mission to date, promoting patriotism, historic preservation, and education; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter have provided thousands of hours of service to the Commonwealth and the United States over the past 100 years; they have cleaned roadsides, assisted veterans and older adults, provided classroom volunteer duties, digitized county courthouse records, and placed historical markers at significant sites in the community; and

WHEREAS, the members of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter maintain the obelisk on Main Street in Culpeper, which was dedicated to the Culpeper Minute Men militia in 1933; the Culpeper gravesite of Betty Washington Lewis, sister of George Washington; and the family plot in Mitchells that is the resting place of Ann Mercer Slaughter, known as a “real daughter” of the American Revolution; and

WHEREAS, the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter also assisted in erecting the first Charters of Freedom in the Commonwealth and commemorates Constitution Week with a public celebration each year; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the organization’s vital contributions to the preservation of American history and unwavering commitment to community service in Culpeper and throughout the Commonwealth and the nation.
