HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 63
Commending Glenn Stuart Settle.

WHEREAS, Glenn Stuart Settle, a distinguished law-enforcement officer, retired as a deputy sheriff with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department in 2023, after a long and successful career; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Settle was a 1965 graduate of George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church and a 1969 graduate of the University of Richmond, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration; and

WHEREAS, on July 7, 1969, Glenn Settle took the oath of office as a police officer with the Arlington County Police Department; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Settle served as a patrol officer and as a special investigations detective in narcotics and vice, then became a district supervisor, overseeing up to 15 patrol officers per shift, while also responding to serious crime scenes; and

WHEREAS, while serving as a police officer in Arlington, Glenn Settle managed the “Doc Maiden Shoe Fund,” a charitable fund started by the department and named in honor of a local physician, that provided money to families in need to purchase clothing, glasses, and other necessities for their children; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Settle retired from the Arlington County Police Department in December 1997 with the rank of sergeant after 28 years and five months of outstanding service; and

WHEREAS, Glenn Settle moved to the village of Sharps in Richmond County for his retirement, but ultimately wished to continue serving and protecting members of the public and returned to police work as a deputy sheriff with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department on February 1, 1998; and

WHEREAS, during his time with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department, Glenn Settle was responsible for courtroom security in the local circuit, general district, and juvenile and domestic relations district courts; in 2004, he was designated head of courtroom security; and

WHEREAS, when not in the courtroom, Glenn Settle served civil process, and he became a mentor to a younger generation of law-enforcement officers by passing on his knowledge of courtroom procedure and the proper role of police in society; and

WHEREAS, on May 1, 2023, Glenn Settle retired for the second time after 25 years and three months of service with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Glenn Stuart Settle hereby be commended for his 54 years of honorable service to the residents of the Commonwealth as a police officer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Glenn Stuart Settle as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his achievements during his exemplary career in law enforcement.
