2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Liberty University football team won the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Conference USA Championship on December 1, 2023, at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg; and
WHEREAS, the Liberty University Flames defeated the New Mexico State University Aggies by a score of 49–35 to bring home a title in the program’s first appearance in the Conference USA Championship; and
WHEREAS, after a hard fought first half that ended with the score tied 21–21, the Liberty University Flames scored two touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half and never looked back; and
WHEREAS, with its 42–28 victory over The University of Texas at El Paso on November 25, 2023, the Liberty University football team finished the regular season with a flawless 12–0 record, going undefeated for the first time in the program’s 50-year history; and
WHEREAS, the Liberty University Flames are notably the first National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I football program in the Commonwealth and only the third team in Conference USA history to achieve the remarkable feat of winning 12 games in regular season play; and
WHEREAS, the Liberty University Flames’ historic season was an extraordinary showing for the program, as it was competing in Conference USA for the first time, and for coach Jamey Chadwell, who was in his first season with the team; and
WHEREAS, the Liberty University Flames were led all season by quarterback Kaidon Salter, who broke school records for total touchdowns in a season and total passing touchdowns in a season during the Conference USA Championship; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the team’s exceptional play all season, the Liberty University Flames earned the opportunity to play in the VRBO Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2024, one of the most prestigious events on the college football calendar; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Liberty University Flames is the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and professors, and the unwavering support of the entire Liberty University community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Liberty University football team hereby be commended for winning the 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association Conference USA Championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jamey Chadwell, coach of the Liberty University football team, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the team’s achievements.
