Celebrating the life of Clifford George Mainous.

WHEREAS, Clifford George Mainous, an esteemed educator and coach and beloved member of the Norton community, died on February 27, 2024; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the former Appalachia High School, where he was a standout on the football team, Clifford “Chig” George Mainous earned an associate degree from Hiwassee College then attended Emory & Henry College, where he also played football and earned a bachelor’s degree; and

WHEREAS, Clifford Mainous next embarked upon a career as an educator and coach, serving first in Council and later in Gate City for several years and contributing greatly to the success of the students he taught and mentored; and

WHEREAS, Clifford Mainous honed his abilities as an educator by earning a master’s degree in Illinois, then returned to the Commonwealth to teach and coach at John I. Burton High School in Norton, where he helped lead the football team to a state championship in 1972 and was named head football coach in 1980; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his efforts as an athlete, educator, and coach, Clifford Mainous was inducted into the Hiwassee College Football Hall of Fame in 2015 and the John I. Burton High School Hall of Fame in 2023; and

WHEREAS, following an accomplished career dedicated to the success and achievements of his students, Clifford Mainous devoted himself to the game of golf at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Wise County and travelled frequently to visit family; and

WHEREAS, Clifford Mainous will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife, Jackie; his children, David, Mary, and Martha, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Clifford George Mainous, a cherished member of the Norton community whose legacy of service was an inspiration to all who knew him; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Clifford George Mainous as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
