Commending the Virginia War Museum.

WHEREAS, the Virginia War Museum, a preeminent institution in Newport News dedicated to preserving and commemorating the history of the United States’ wars, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023; and

WHEREAS, the entity that would become the Virginia War Museum was originally established by the Braxton-Perkins Post 25 of the American Legion to memorialize the brave veterans who fought in World War I; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia War Museum was later designated the American Legion Memorial Museum of Virginia and chartered in 1936 to serve as the Commonwealth’s official repository for war-related artifacts; the institution was renamed twice, first to the War Memorial Museum of Virginia in 1948 and then to the Virginia War Museum in 1996; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia War Museum’s collection has grown to more than 45,000 artifacts, featuring items from the American Revolution up to present-day conflicts, including weapons, vehicles, uniforms, propaganda posters, and other memorabilia; and

WHEREAS, in addition to its displays of America’s wars from 1775 to today, the Virginia War Museum has galleries exploring the roles of women and African Americans in the United States Armed Forces and the history of Newport News as a port of embarkation; and

WHEREAS, some of the Virginia War Museum’s most noteworthy items include Harry Truman’s helmet from World War I and sections of both the Berlin Wall and the outer wall of the Dachau concentration camp; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia War Museum commemorated its 100th anniversary with an Armed Forces Day concert, war reenactments, a “100 Years, 100 Artifacts” social media campaign, and other events; and

WHEREAS, for the past century, the Virginia War Museum has provided a solemn and dignified refuge where the public may gather to remember and reflect upon the sacrifices made by many to ensure the freedoms we enjoy today; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Virginia War Museum in Newport News hereby be commended for its efforts to preserve and honor the history of the United States’ wars on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia War Museum as an expression of the House of Delegates’ high regard for the institution’s contributions to Newport News and the Commonwealth.
