Commending Jessica Burgess, M.D.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 4, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Jessica Burgess, M.D., an associate professor of surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School and a trauma and emergency general surgeon at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, was selected as one of the top “40 under 40” female surgeons in the nation by the Association of Women Surgeons in 2022; and

WHEREAS, a Hampton Roads native, Jessica Burgess graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in 2005, where she also completed her surgical residency and fellowship training in trauma and surgical critical care; and

WHEREAS, Jessica Burgess has served as a trauma surgeon at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH), the region’s only Level I trauma center, for the last 9 years, working tirelessly to provide high-quality and efficient care to her patients; and

WHEREAS, Jessica Burgess played a vital role in the response to the Walmart shooting in Chesapeake on November 22, 2022, helping to lead SNGH’s efforts to care for victims of that tragic incident; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her academic and surgical responsibilities, Jessica Burgess serves as chair of the Disaster Committee and as co-chair of the Critical Care Committee at SNGH and is director of the surgical critical care fellowship at EVMS; and

WHEREAS, Jessica Burgess supports advancements in surgery and patient care through her involvement with the American College of Surgeons, serving on its Patient Education Committee and on the governing council of its Young Fellows Association; and

WHEREAS, inspired by the guidance she received during medical school and residency, Jessica Burgess gives generously of her time to mentor and educate the next generation of surgeons and health care professionals; and

WHEREAS, Jessica Burgess has exemplified the highest virtues of the surgical profession through her unwavering commitment to her patients and their well-being, earning the esteem and admiration of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Jessica Burgess, M.D., hereby be commended for being selected as one of the top “40 under 40” female surgeons in the nation by the Association of Women Surgeons; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jessica Burgess, M.D., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ high regard for her dedication and service.
