HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 204
Celebrating the life of Michael Eugene Holbrook.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 4, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Michael Eugene Holbrook, honorable veteran, dedicated law-enforcement officer, esteemed public servant, and an active and beloved member of the Wise County community, died on January 20, 2024; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the former Saint Paul High School in Wise County, Michael Holbrook served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Marine Corps from 1979 to 1983; and

WHEREAS, Michael Holbrook subsequently joined the Wise County Sheriff’s Office and served in various positions, including as dispatcher, jailer, road deputy, Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer, sergeant, lieutenant, crisis negotiator, and captain, before retiring from the agency as chief investigator; and

WHEREAS, Michael Holbrook also served as a drug task force officer with the Virginia State Police and was involved with a number of local organizations as an extension of his commitment to the safety and well-being of the Southwest Virginia community; and

WHEREAS, Michael Holbrook proudly served his constituents and their interests as a member of the Coeburn Town Council from 2016 to 2020, demonstrating great concern for his hometown and its residents; and

WHEREAS, Michael Holbrook was a graduate of the Forward Wise County leadership development program sponsored by the Wise County Chamber of Commerce, which named him Citizen of the Year in 2010; and

WHEREAS, Michael Holbrook gave generously of his time to the community as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Coeburn, which he served as treasurer, secretary, and president, and as a member of the board of directors for the Lays Hardware Center for the Arts and the American Legion Post 243; and

WHEREAS, guided throughout his life by his faith, Michael Holbrook enjoyed worship and fellowship with his community at First Baptist Church of Coeburn since 1993, where he served in various leadership positions, including as deacon and trustee; and

WHEREAS, Michael Holbrook will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 30 years, Rose Mary; his children, Zac and Heather, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Michael Eugene Holbrook, a cherished member of the Wise County community whose dedication and service inspired all who knew him; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Michael Eugene Holbrook as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
