WHEREAS, Sandra Gioia Treadway, a distinguished historian who has preserved Virginia’s heritage and strengthened educational outreach to communities throughout the Commonwealth, has retired as the Librarian of Virginia after 16 years of outstanding service; and

WHEREAS, Sandra “Sandy” Gioia Treadway holds degrees from Manhattanville College, the University of Virginia, and the University of Tennessee, and she first joined the staff of The Library of Virginia in 1978 as an associate editor of publications; and

WHEREAS, over the course of her career, Sandy Treadway worked in various positions at The Library of Virginia, including deputy librarian; she was selected as the ninth Librarian of Virginia in 2007 and has ably managed The Library of Virginia’s comprehensive collection of materials documenting the history, culture, and government of the Commonwealth since that time; and

WHEREAS, under Sandy Treadway’s leadership, The Library of Virginia achieved significant growth in the digitization and accessibility of its records, expanded exhibitions, and launched innovative projects like Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative and Making History with LVA, a volunteer transcription program; the Library further expanded public programming statewide through the launch of its mobile van, LVA On the Go; and

WHEREAS, Sandy Treadway has overseen The Library of Virginia’s participation in several historical commemorations, including the anniversary of the founding of Jamestown in 2007, the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission, the Virginia Bicentennial of the American War of 1812 Commission, and the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution; she also helped organize a yearlong celebration of the Library’s own 200th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Sandy Treadway strengthened The Library of Virginia’s ties to government agencies and officials and to the library community across the Commonwealth and nationwide, ensuring that the Library has the support it needs to continue fulfilling its important mission; she also has served on numerous state advisory groups, including the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council and the Virginia Women’s Monument Commission; and

WHEREAS, Sandy Treadway also offered her wisdom and expertise to the American Library Association, the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies, and the Southern Association for Women Historians; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure as the Librarian of Virginia, Sandy Treadway has mentored and inspired countless fellow library professionals and built a capable, dedicated, and highly motived team that will continue to serve the residents of the Commonwealth after her well-earned retirement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Sandra Gioia Treadway hereby be commended on the occasion of her retirement as the Librarian of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sandra Gioia Treadway as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for her achievements in service to the Commonwealth.
