HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 124
Celebrating the life of the Reverend Jamie Jerome Duncan.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 19, 2024
 

WHEREAS, the Reverend Jamie Jerome Duncan, a highly admired spiritual leader who touched countless lives in the Richmond community, died on April 25, 2023; and

WHEREAS, affectionately known to family and friends as “Rome,” Jamie Duncan was born in Charlottesville and grew up in Buckingham County, where he attended public schools; and

WHEREAS, Jamie Duncan began to cultivate his deep faith at a young age as a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church in New Canton, where he served as an ordained deacon and assisted the pastor in worship services, revivals, baptisms, counseling, and community outreach; he developed his leadership skills as the chair of the diaconate for three years; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Buckingham County High School, Jamie Duncan began working for what is now Dominion Energy, where he was admired for his professionalism and rose through the ranks from storeroom supervisor to supply project specialist, senior inventory analyst, and senior materials specialist; and

WHEREAS, Jamie Duncan subsequently continued his education at Liberty University’s Rawlings School of Divinity and entered the ministry in 1997; he joined the staff of Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, where he was licensed to preach in 2000 and ordained as a minister in 2004; and

WHEREAS, Jamie Duncan served as the campus pastor for the Petersburg and Creighton locations of Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, inspiring and empowering members of those congregations through his engaging sermons; and

WHEREAS, Jamie Duncan held other leadership roles as the associate pastor and team leader for congregational care, as well as the assistant director of a counseling center; he also worked directly with congregants between the ages of 50 and 59 as a life stage pastor; and

WHEREAS, Jamie Duncan participated in several mission trips with Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, including one to Africa, where he preached before the president of Liberia; and

WHEREAS, outside of his career in ministry, Jamie Duncan was an avid fan of the Washington Commanders, a martial artist who held a brown belt in karate, a talented painter, and an amateur meteorologist; and

WHEREAS, Jamie Duncan was a true family man whose greatest joy in life was spending time with his loved ones, and he relished every opportunity to impart his wisdom and commitment to servant-leadership to his children and grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Jamie Duncan will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted wife of 34 years, Brenda; his daughters, LaKeisha and Destiny, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Reverend Jamie Jerome Duncan; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Jamie Jerome Duncan as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
