HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 84 Encouraging public institutions of higher education in Virginia to display the VA250 logo on all men’s and women’s athletic uniforms for the 2025 – 2026 academic year.   Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 6, 2024 Agreed to by the Senate, February 27, 2024  

WHEREAS, the Virginia General Assembly in 2020 established the VA250 Commemoration Commission to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and American independence; and

WHEREAS, the Commission has been charged with creating a state-wide, multi-faceted and inclusive commemoration that will educate, engage and inspire all communities throughout the Commonwealth and nation; and

WHEREAS, Virginia has always been the crucible of our nation: the first colonists arrived in Virginia; the first encounters with indigenous people occurred in Virginia the first enslaved peoples arrived in Virginia, the first representative government was formed in Virginia, and Virginians authored the founding documents of our nation, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights; and

WHEREAS, Virginia will lead the nation in America’s 250th commemoration, hosting national and international events, exhibitions, meetings and symposia intended to educate Virginians and Americans about our desire “To Form a More Perfect Union” and to reignite the beginning of a new era of civic engagement; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s 15 public colleges and universities play a critical role in educating young Virginians and Americans about our history, our founding ideals and system of government; and

WHEREAS, Virginia’s 15 public colleges and universities can help build awareness of the VA250 Commemoration and all the activities related to it; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the public institutions of higher education be encouraged to display the logo of the VA250 Commemoration Commission on to the front of the jerseys and uniforms of all athletic teams, both men’s and women’s, for the 2025 – 2026 academic year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Executive Director of the State Council of Higher Education and to the presidents and athletic directors of all Virginia public institutions of higher education requesting their participation in following the guidance of this resolution.
