HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 426 Offered March 4, 2024 Commending the Douglas Freeman High School girls' lacrosse team. ---------- Patron-- Willett ----------

WHEREAS, the Douglas Freeman High School girls’ lacrosse team earned its third consecutive state title with a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 5 state championship in June 2023; and

WHEREAS, in the state final, the Douglas Freeman High School Mavericks defeated the Independence High School Tigers by a score of 16–10; and

WHEREAS, the Independence Tigers scored first and jumped to an early 2–0 lead, but the Douglas Freeman Mavericks quickly responded with four consecutive goals to pull ahead; and

WHEREAS, late in the game, the Independence Tigers launched a comeback effort, cutting the deficit to three points, but the experienced Douglas Freeman squad, which included seven seniors, kept their composure to seal the win; and

WHEREAS, senior goalie Zara Issak made several crucial saves throughout the game, and senior midfielders Grace Moore and Bridget Wilson, longtime teammates who have played together since elementary school, led the Douglas Freeman Mavericks with six goals each; and

WHEREAS, the victorious season is a tribute to the skill and hard work of all the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of coaches and staff, and the passionate support of the entire Douglas Freeman High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Douglas Freeman High School girls’ lacrosse team on winning the Virginia High School League Class 5 state championship in 2023; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Christina D’Angelo, head coach of the Douglas Freeman High School girls’ lacrosse team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the team’s incredible achievements.
