2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, for more than 20 years, Equality Loudoun has been the voice of the LGBTQ+ community in Loudoun County, working with a broad coalition of allies, groups, and other organizations to promote inclusiveness and build community support; and
WHEREAS, Equality Loudoun traces its deepest roots to the 1980s and the formation of the Loudoun Pioneers, a social club for gay and lesbian community members; and
WHEREAS, Equality Loudoun was formed as a grassroots organization in 2003 to provide much-needed advocacy, education, and community building for LGBTQ+ people and other marginalized groups in the region; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, Equality Loudoun marched for the first time in the Leesburg Independence Day Parade to bring visibility to the LGBTQ+ community and build goodwill; and
WHEREAS, since that time, Equality Loudoun has fostered an active and engaged LGBTQ+ community in Loudoun County through various social events, programs, and activities both during Pride Month and throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, among many achievements, Equality Loudoun was a key advocate in support of decisions by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and Loudoun County Public Schools to add gender identity and sexual orientation protections to their equal opportunity policies; and
WHEREAS, to honor victims of anti-transgender violence, Equality Loudoun held its first annual Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil in 2017; and
WHEREAS, Equality Loudoun was officially incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 2020 to better serve its clients and the community as a whole; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Equality Loudoun on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its formation; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Equality Loudoun as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s contributions to the LGBTQ+ community and work to enhance the quality of life of all Loudoun County residents.
