Commending Janet V. Green.

WHEREAS, Janet V. Green, an esteemed community leader and dedicated advocate for inclusive communities, recently announced her retirement effective January 1, 2025, from her position as chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg; and

WHEREAS, since 2002, Janet V. Green has led Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg (PGW), an organization that has helped hundreds of individuals and families in the region build and repair their homes; and

WHEREAS, Janet V. Green’s tenure at Habitat for Humanity PGW was defined by her capacity for innovation, evidenced by her ability to guide homeowners through the financial straits of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as her willingness to explore new building techniques, including insulating concrete forms and the nation’s first Habitat for Humanity three-dimensional printed home; and

WHEREAS, shortly after joining Habitat for Humanity PGW, Janet V. Green opened the first Habitat ReStore in Newport News in 2003, a store that raises money for future Habitat for Humanity projects by selling donated home goods and building materials; she also led the ReStores in Williamsburg and Yorktown, opened in 2012 and 2023, respectively; and

WHEREAS, under Janet V. Green’s leadership, the ReStores in Williamsburg and Newport News ranked among the most successful ReStores in the nation, a testament to her passion and commitment to the organization’s mission; and

WHEREAS, Janet V. Green has been devoted to social justice and inclusive communities since her time at Michigan State, where she earned a degree in social work; and

WHEREAS, after shifting her focus from social work to politics to broaden her impact, Janet V. Green served as special assistant to the president and as director of White House operations in President William J. Clinton’s administration; and

WHEREAS, Janet V. Green played an instrumental role in the formation of the Corporation for National Service, commonly known as AmeriCorps, and also served as executive director of the Democratic National Committee during President Clinton’s second term; and

WHEREAS, beyond Habitat for Humanity, Janet V. Green has promoted inclusive communities through her service with a number of local boards and organizations, including the CIVIC Leadership Institute, the James City County Workforce Housing Task Force, the Judy Ford Wason Center for Public Policy, and more; and

WHEREAS, Janet V. Green has received numerous honors and accolades in recognition of her service over the years, such as being named to the 2023 Inside Business Power List Top 20 and being presented a Humanitarian Award from the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities in 2020; and

WHEREAS, Janet V. Green’s visionary leadership and tireless efforts over more than two decades at Habitat for Humanity PGW have helped to make the Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg area a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Janet V. Green on the occasion of her retirement as chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Janet V. Green as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her legacy of service and best wishes in her future endeavors.
