24108557DWHEREAS, for 65 years, Braddock Elementary School, an outstanding public primary school in Fairfax County, has given young people the tools to become engaged, lifelong learners with the tools and knowledge they need to achieve success in all their endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Braddock Elementary School was developed in response to significant growth in the region after World War II and was known during its construction as Bristow Elementary School as it was meant to serve the Bristow neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, in March 1959, Braddock Elementary School was officially named for Major General Edward Braddock, a British solider and commander-in-chief of the Thirteen Colonies during the French and Indian War; and
WHEREAS, Braddock Elementary School opened on September 4, 1959, with Margaret F. Daughtry as its first principal; the school had 20 classrooms with a capacity for 600 students; and
WHEREAS, after a fire devastated Braddock Elementary School in February 1964, students finished the school year at the new Thomas Jefferson High School, which had not been scheduled to open until the following September; and
WHEREAS, with support from the community, reconstruction of Braddock Elementary School commenced quickly, and the school reopened with a 10-room addition in 1964; and
WHEREAS, today, Braddock Elementary School strives to create a safe, loving, and encouraging environment that celebrates diversity and cultivates mutual honesty, respect, and love of learning; and
WHEREAS, Braddock Elementary School offers a rigorous academic curriculum and many opportunities for sports and extracurricular activities, empowering students to achieve their fullest potential in and out of the classroom; and
WHEREAS, the faculty and staff of Braddock Elementary School work diligently with community partners to ensure the academic success and socio-emotional development of all students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Braddock Elementary School on the occasion of its 65th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Braddock Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s contributions to the Fairfax County community.
