HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 368
Commending the Alexandria Commission for Women.

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Commission for Women, a municipal organization composed of 15 volunteers appointed by the Alexandria City Council and an executive director from City of Alexandria staff, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2024; and

WHEREAS, upon completion of a 1974 study on the status of women, the Alexandria City Council established the Alexandria Commission for Women in order to eliminate gender discrimination and to encourage equal opportunity for women in all aspects of their lives; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Commission for Women supports existing city programs, including the Alexandria Domestic Violence Program, the Alexandria Sexual Assault Center, and the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy, and other initiatives in the areas of reproductive health, affordable housing, and transportation; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Commission for Women provides guidance and advice to the City of Alexandria on relevant legislation and public policy issues; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Commission for Women sponsors many awareness and outreach events, including Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, and since 1980 has hosted an annual Salute to Women Awards Banquet; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Commission for Women promotes the preservation and promotion of women’s history in Alexandria through its women’s history tour and related projects; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Commission for Women stays active in affairs within the city, and commissioners learn about and provide insight on local issues by attending city council meetings, hearings, and symposia; inviting speakers to Commission meetings; and attending educational and civic programs within the city and around the region; and

WHEREAS, the Alexandria Commission for Women published a report in 2018 on the status of women’s equity in Alexandria and made recommendations based on their findings; and

WHEREAS, as a result of the work over the past 50 years of the members of the Alexandria Commission for Women, and all women in Alexandria, the City of Alexandria has become a more equitable place to live and work; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Alexandria Commission for Women on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Alexandria Commission for Women as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s history and its contributions to Alexandria and the Commonwealth.
