WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, an institution in Richmond dedicated to presenting the entire history of the Commonwealth over time and across regions, was presented the Award of Excellence by the American Association of State and Local History in 2023; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) is owned and operated by the Virginia Historical Society, the oldest cultural organization in the Commonwealth and one of the oldest and most distinguished history organizations in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the Award of Excellence is the highest honor of the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH), the preeminent association of history museums and organizations in the country; and

WHEREAS, the VMHC was the only institution in the Commonwealth and one of only 51 organizations out of more than 20,000 to be recognized by the AASLH in 2023; and

WHEREAS, the VMHC received this prestigious honor in recognition of the historic renovation and curatorial and programmatic reimagination that the museum underwent in 2022 and the History Matters campaign that it carried out to make the institution a more inclusive and welcoming place for all; and

WHEREAS, the VMHC’s achievements in its recent transformation underscore the power museums have to build community, foster understanding, and improve the quality of life for all people; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia Museum of History & Culture for receiving the 2023 American Association of State and Local History’s Award of Excellence; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jamie Bosket, president and chief executive officer of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the institution’s contributions to the Commonwealth.
