2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, Noah Lyles of Alexandria made history by winning two gold medals in sprint events at the 2023 World Athletics Championships; and
WHEREAS, a 2016 graduate of T.C. Williams High School, now known as Alexandria City High School, Noah Lyles has won a total of five gold medals in three consecutive world championships; and
WHEREAS, at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, held in Budapest, Hungary, Noah Lyles recorded a personal best time of 9.83 seconds during his victory in the 100-meter race; and
WHEREAS, a few days later, Noah Lyles also won the 200-meter race with a time of 19.52 seconds to achieve the coveted “sprint double”; and
WHEREAS, Noah Lyles is only the fifth athlete in history to win a gold medal in both events, an incredible feat that was last achieved by Usain Bolt in 2015; and
WHEREAS, through his amazing athletic abilities, Noah Lyles represented the Commonwealth with honor and distinction on the world stage; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Noah Lyles for winning two gold medals at the 2023 World Athletics Championships; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Noah Lyles as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his historic accomplishments.
