Commending Kathleen White.

WHEREAS, for two decades, Kathleen White has helped young people in Colonial Heights enhance their communications skills and prepare for higher education and careers while serving as a teacher and library media specialist at Colonial Heights High School; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State University and a certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards; she began her career in 1994 in Iola, Kansas, where she taught high school English and supported students as a faculty sponsor for numerous extracurricular activities; and

WHEREAS, a military spouse, Kathleen White later worked as a library media specialist for Patton Junior High School, which is located on base at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from 1998 to 2004; while teaching on the historic post at Fort Leavenworth, she was instrumental in educating the sons and daughters of members of the United States Armed Forces, as well as the children of international allies; and

WHEREAS, during that time, Kathleen White also served as co-chair of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, a regional school accreditation organization; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White joined Colonial Heights High School in 2004 after her husband was reassigned to what is now Fort Gregg-Adams and quickly became a leader in the school community; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White became the first library media specialist to develop and teach an honors-level course that helps students leverage technology to enhance their verbal and written communications skills; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White’s innovative class, Power Research, also teaches students about the college admissions process and provides tools and assets to help students successfully apply to institutions of their choosing; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White has gone above and beyond to ensure students receive the finest education, including by stepping in for an English teacher midway through an academic year; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White was an advocate for the creation of a quiet lunch environment for students and led efforts to grant seniors the privilege of using the library as a lunchroom; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White serves as an advisor to the Key Club, Innovators for Change Book Club, and co-chair of the Volunteer-A-Thon; she also oversees continuous efforts to maintain and beautify the courtyards adjoining the media center; and

WHEREAS, Kathleen White has earned the respect and admiration of her peers and school administrators, and she is frequently named by Colonial Heights High School students as the most influential educator in their lives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Kathleen White for her legacy of achievements as an educator and library media specialist; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kathleen White as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her contributions to the library sciences and loyal service to the students of Colonial Heights High School.
