WHEREAS, Elizabeth Burgoyne Knapp, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister and treasured member of the Reston and South Lakes High School communities, died on January 13, 2024; and

WHEREAS, born in Liverpool, England, and raised in Buffalo, New York, Elizabeth “Liz” Burgoyne Knapp graduated from Amherst Central High School in Buffalo before attending McGill University and earning a degree from the former Hardbarger Business College; and

WHEREAS, following graduation, Liz Knapp moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for some time with the Association of American Medical Colleges before marrying her husband, Dr. Richard M. Knapp, in 1969 and moving to Reston soon thereafter; and

WHEREAS, Liz Knapp devoted herself to raising her children and caring for her family over many years and became an active and engaged member of the Reston community; and

WHEREAS, in 1989, Liz Knapp began a new phase of her life that would span nearly three decades when she began working at the front desk at South Lakes High School in Reston; and

WHEREAS, Liz Knapp became a pillar of the South Lakes High School community over her tenure with the school and contributed in myriad ways to the success of her students and fellow faculty and staff; and

WHEREAS, an avid traveler and sports fan, Liz Knapp found her greatest joy in life in spending quality time with her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Liz Knapp was presented with various awards and recognitions by South Lakes High School over the years for her service and received county-wide recognition in 2006 when she was named Lady Fairfax by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors; and

WHEREAS, Liz Knapp will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her loving husband, Richard; her children, Peter and Heather, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Elizabeth Burgoyne Knapp, a cherished member of the communities of Reston and South Lakes High School whose kindness and generosity touched countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Elizabeth Burgoyne Knapp as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
