Commending the Virginia School Boards Association.

WHEREAS, for 118 years, the Virginia School Boards Association, a voluntary, nonprofit organization that supports local school boards throughout the Commonwealth, has promoted excellence in public education through leadership, advocacy, and innovative programs; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia School Boards Association works to ensure that every child in the public education system deserves to receive the tools and support they need, when they need it, to advance student outcomes; and

WHEREAS, inequities in schools and learning loss exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic have become increasingly significant challenges across both the Commonwealth and the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia School Boards Association has established a Task Force on Students and Schools in Challenging Environments to make recommendations and to stay at the forefront of discussions on academic excellence in Virginia schools; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia School Boards Association has studied the way factors like disability, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status have a demonstrated history of impacting the educational opportunities provided to a student; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia School Boards Association also seeks to address the way that inequities in resources, including educational settings, supplies, technology, and buildings can impede student learning; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia School Boards Association strives to fulfill the promise of public education for every child to be successful in school and life in every locality and community in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, it is important for Virginia families, school boards, students, teachers, and school administrators to be aware of the diverse needs of learners, and to encourage discussion of the challenges as a school community; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia School Boards Association recognizes the month of March as Equity in Education Month to encourage educational equity, promote best practices, and invigorate discussions about equity in Virginia’s communities, school divisions, and classrooms; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Virginia School Boards Association for its contributions to the advancement of equity in public education throughout the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia School Boards Association as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the organization’s vital mission and legacy of achievements in service to students.
