2024 SESSION
WHEREAS, James G. Ashworth, Jr., an esteemed law-enforcement officer and chief of the Tappahannock Police Department for the last 11 years, retired on December 31, 2023; and
WHEREAS, James Ashworth began his law-enforcement career with the Virginia State Police on November 1, 1975, and graduated from the state police academy in July 1976; and
WHEREAS, committed to achieving excellence in his profession, James Ashworth honed his abilities as a law-enforcement officer by earning an associate’s degree in political science from Rappahannock Community College and completing courses at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia’s National Criminal Justice Command College; and
WHEREAS, as a result of his exemplary efforts, James Ashworth would be promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1990 and first sergeant nine years later before ultimately retiring from the Virginia State Police on July 1, 2012; and
WHEREAS, that same day, James Ashworth accepted an appointment to serve as the chief of the Tappahannock Police Department and immediately began working to enhance the agency’s services for the community; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure with the Tappahannock Police Department, James Ashworth built the agency into a standard bearer for the region, in large part by improving working conditions for staff and by achieving accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission of the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services; and
WHEREAS, over nearly a half-century of dedicated service to the Commonwealth and the Town of Tappahannock, James Ashworth has upheld the highest ideals of the law-enforcement profession, earning the respect and admiration of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend James G. Ashworth, Jr., on the occasion of his retirement for his unwavering commitment to protecting and serving the citizens of the Commonwealth and the Town of Tappahannock; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to James G. Ashworth, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s high regard for his noteworthy career and legacy of service.
