AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE

A BILL to amend and reenact § 22.1-137 of the Code of Virginia, relating to public schools; fire drills; timing and frequency.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That § 22.1-137 of the Code of Virginia is amended and reenacted as follows:

§ 22.1-137. Fire drills.

In Notwithstanding any requirement of the Statewide Fire Prevention Code (§ 27-94 et seq.) to the contrary, every public school there shall be hold a fire drill at least twice during the first 20 school days of each school session, in order that pupils may be thoroughly practiced in such drills. Every public school shall hold, and at least two additional fire drills during the remainder of the school session.

2. That the Board of Housing and Community Development and the Virginia Fire Services Board shall, during the next update cycle for the Statewide Fire Prevention Code (§ 27-94 et seq. of the Code of Virginia), amend the Statewide Fire Prevention Code in accordance with the provisions of this act.
