2023 SPECIAL SESSION I
23200058DWHEREAS, the Abingdon High School girls’ outdoor track and field team won the Virginia High School League Class 3 state championship on June 3, 2023, at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex at Liberty University; and
WHEREAS, the Abingdon High School Falcons tallied 66 points to outpace the runner-up Charlottesville High School Black Knights by more than 16 points and to bring home the program’s first outright state championship title in track and field; and
WHEREAS, the Abingdon Falcons had an impressive 13 qualifiers at the state competition, who each contributed to the team’s success with strong performances in their events; and
WHEREAS, the Abingdon Falcons were led by Makaleigh Jessee, who won the individual state championship in the 3,200 meter race; Jada Samuel and Chloe Odum, who both finished runner-up in individual events; and the 4x800 meter relay team, which also placed second; and
WHEREAS, the Abingdon High School Falcons’ win brought home their second title of the season, cementing their dominant streak after they finished in first place in the 2022–2023 Virginia High School League Class 3 state championship for cross-country and as runner-up in the indoor track and field state meet; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Abingdon Falcons are the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire Abingdon High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Abingdon High School girls’ track and field team hereby be commended for winning the 2022–2023 Virginia High School League Class 3 state championships in outdoor track and field and cross-country; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Abingdon High School girls’ track and field team as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the team’s achievements.
