HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 611 Commending the Halifax County High School softball team.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, September 6, 2023

 

WHEREAS, the Halifax County High School softball team made history on June 10, 2023, when it became the first softball team from Halifax County High School to compete in the Virginia High School League Class 4 state championship; and

WHEREAS, the Halifax County High School Comets reached the Virginia High School League (VHSL) semifinal game for the first time in program history the year prior and rode that momentum into the team’s stellar 2022–2023 season; and

WHEREAS, the Halifax County Comets overcame adversity throughout the season, including a broken-down bus on the way to the team’s first state tournament game, rising to every challenge with exceptional positivity and enthusiasm; and

WHEREAS, the Halifax County Comets rallied from behind in both the VHSL quarterfinal and semifinal, first defeating James Wood High School of Winchester by a score of 16–9 and then Spotsylvania High School by a score of 13–7; and

WHEREAS, given that the state final would coincide with Halifax County High School’s graduation the next day, the Comets’ seniors, Kamyria Woody-Giggetts, Shamya Hankins, Jadyn Harlow, Jaci Parham, and Destiny Talbott, enjoyed the unique experience of graduating a day early during an on-field postgame ceremony following the team’s semifinal victory; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the Halifax County Comets are the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire Halifax County High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Halifax County High School softball team hereby be commended for reaching the Virginia High School League Class 4 state championship for the first time in program history; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jennifer Rutledge, coach of the Halifax County High School softball team, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the team’s achievement.
