SENATE BILL NO. 924 AMENDMENT IN THE NATURE OF A SUBSTITUTE (Proposed by the House Committee on Appropriations on February 13, 2023) (Patron Prior to Substitute--Senator DeSteph) A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding in Chapter 1 of Title 44 an article numbered 14, consisting of a section numbered 44-122.1, relating to burial fees for military spouses.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding in Chapter 1 of Title 44 an article numbered 14, consisting of a section numbered 44-122.1, as follows:

Article 14. Burial Fees for Military Spouses.

§ 44-122.1. Burial fees for military spouses.

From such funds as may be appropriated, the Commonwealth shall pay any burial fee charged for the burial at a veterans cemetery operated by the Department of Veterans Services of (i) a member of the National Guard and Reserve, (ii) a spouse of an active duty member or veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States or a spouse of a member of the National Guard and Reserve, or (iii) a surviving spouse of such member or veteran. The Department of Veterans Services shall develop guidelines for the administration of this section.
